Any time there is sexual activity involving a male and a female, there is a possibility of pregnancy. Birth control helps you prevent and plan the timing of pregnancy.

When a pregnancy test comes back positive, it can be welcome news – for a couple who was planning and trying to become pregnant – or it can be unexpected. In both cases, there is a lot to learn and many things you now need to think about.

Emergency Contraception

Emergency contraception (EC) is not advised for use as a regular method of birth control, but if you have had unprotected sex for any reason, emergency contraception can help prevent an unplanned pregnancy if used as soon as possible.

There are EC methods that are effective for up to 5 days after unprotected sex. Some EC pills are available from a pharmacist without a prescription; others are available from your doctor. Your doctor can also insert an IUD for emergency and ongoing birth control. Read more in the section on Emergency Contraception.

Preventing Pregnancy

No birth control method is 100% able to prevent pregnancy, but there are many effective options. Learn more about what’s available in Canada in the section on Contraception. We review the options to help you understand them and help you narrow down the choices. If you are in a relationship, we suggest that you review the options with your partner – birth control is a shared responsibility. You can also talk over your choices with your health care provider.
